Active Kids, Active Minds
At Active Kids Nursery, we are committed to ensuring that all children in our nursery have a good understanding of healthy eating, allowing them to enjoy a variety of foods. We provide nutritious meals and encourage children to question what goes into their food, via teaching them about different ingredients and food groups.
The cost of all our freshly prepared meals, drinks, and snacks is included in the session fee. Please note that we charge extra for meals if your child attends only funded sessions, as this is not currently covered by Brighton & Hove City Council.
Served between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. each morning, we serve up a range of low-sugar options, offering wholemeal and multigrain choices to suit children’s dietary requirements or parents’ preferences. Options include:
Children are offered healthy snacks at 10:00 a.m. each day and are encouraged to get involved in preparation as special helpers. The snack table is set up with a variety of fruit, vegetables, and crackers, including gluten-free options. This is a great opportunity to find out what their favourite healthy snacks are at home too.
Although we ask every child if they would like a snack, we don’t call everyone to the snack table. We wouldn’t like to disrupt children if they are busy playing or learning, but a member of staff will always ask.
Our hot lunch is served at 12:00 p.m. and followed by a homemade low-sugar dessert. We believe good nutrition is an essential element of mental and physical development in the early years, and therefore we ensure that they are given a well-balanced diet. All meals are cooked from scratch with fresh ingredients and in-season vegetables by our cooks, Monika and Renata.
As with the morning snack break, children who attend the afternoon session will be invited to help us prepare the fruit, which we serve around 3:00 p.m. All fruit is set up at our snack table, enabling the children to choose fruit in their own time.
At Active Kids Nursery, we cook all our own food, allowing us to vary children’s diets and ensure our food caters to allergies safely. As we adapt our home-cooked recipes to children’s needs, we are happy to accommodate children with food allergies, intolerances, and any special requirements, including:
Around 4:00 p.m., we serve afternoon tea. With our commitment to promoting independent choices, we do offer different options if the children ask for something, but we usually follow our weekly menu of freshly prepared healthy options, including:
We aim to provide infant formula for babies who are under a year old and attend more than 3 sessions a week. As opened tins need to be thrown away after 2 weeks, we will encourage parents to provide formula daily if we are unable to provide ourselves.
Appreciating that breast milk is the best option for babies in their early years, we encourage parents to continue to breast-feed for as long as possible. We are happy to store breast milk in the fridge in our Baby Room or in the freezer, from which it can be defrosted for your baby as needed. All bottles are labelled with the baby’s name and dated to ensure their freshness.
Active Kids Nursery fully supports any parent going through the weaning process. Milk provides all the nutrients that your baby needs for the first 6 months or so, but we appreciate that some babies may be ready before that.
Your baby will not be served solid foods until you inform us that they have started to eat solids at home. We will only serve them fruit and vegetables that you have tried with them at home and we will never introduce them to new tastes unless they are stable on solid food.
We support all our children as they gradually move onto the main menu alongside the other children, so they feel comfortable when trying new foods being surrounded by their carers and friends.
